A heat pump, also known as a reverse cycle air conditioner, extracts heat energy from one volume of air and transfers it to another. So one body of air gets warmer while the other gets cooler. Heat pumps can heat in winter, cool in summer, dehumidify the air, and circulate and filter the air.

An inverter heat pump has an electronically controlled compressor that speeds up or slows down depending on the room temperature. Standard heat pumps run their compressors at full speed whenever heat is needed. Inverters give smoother temperature control and lower running costs.
